Men's lacrosse is different from women's lacrosse in that women's lacrosse field players all have similar sticks, while men's lacrosse uses three different kinds of sticks. These sticks -- short, long and goalie sticks -- vary in size. All sticks must meet specific size regulations as set forth by lacrosse's governing body, US Lacrosse, in order to be used in a game.
Anatomy
Lacrosse sticks are made out of wood or synthetic material such as aluminum or titanium. The two main parts of the stick are the shaft and the head. The shaft of the stick is a long, hollow handle. The head is securely attached to the top of the stick with screws. It is roughly triangular in shape, wider at the top and narrower at the bottom where it meets the shaft. The netting of the stick, used to catch and hold the ball, is tied to one side of the head. Traditionally, sticks were laced with leather strings, but now almost all sticks have a nylon mesh.
Short Sticks
Short sticks must be between 40 inches and 42 inches long, including both the shaft and head. Attacking players and some midfield players use these sticks. The shorter length allows for easier control of the stick in order to shoot and pass.
There are other dimensional regulations for short sticks: The length of the head must be at least 10 inches long and can be between 6.5 and 10 inches at its widest point. The shaft cannot be more than 3.5 inches in circumference.
Long Sticks
The length of a long stick must be between 52 and 72 inches long. Defensive players and usually one midfielder use these sticks. Rules allow the use of a long stick by a maximum of four players per team. The added length makes it easier for defensive players to try to pry the ball away from their opponents with their sticks. The other dimensions of long sticks must be the same as short sticks.
Goalie Sticks
Goaltenders have different sticks from the rest of the players; only players designated as a team's goalie can use this stick. The main difference is the head of the stick. Goalie sticks must be between 10 and 12 inches wide. The wide head gives a goalie a better opportunity to stop an opponent's shot. The length must be between 40 and 72 inches, meaning goalies can use either short or long sticks.
