Kelley Athletic Co. is a sports product manufacturer that offers a wide selection of baseball gloves. Conditioning a glove refers to breaking it in so that it fits your hand, and maintaining the skin. When gloves are new, they tend to be stiff. Breaking in any glove is a process that can take weeks. Your Kelley glove will be more comfortable and last longer if you take the time to break it in right and care for it.
Step 1
Apply the Kelley glove oil product to the center of the glove, the palm area. Rub the oil in with your hand. Repeat the process on the strings of the gloves.
Step 2
Place the glove on your hand after oiling.
Step 3
Squeeze your hand into a fist so the glove bends toward the center. The Kelley company website refers to the functional sections that curve as "hinges." Watch the glove as it bends. The goal is to locate each separate hinge.
Step 4
Take the glove off. Use your hands to manipulate the glove at the hinge point. Repeat the process until you do all the hinges; each hinge will need to be worked 50 to 75 times. If necessary, work two or three at a time and repeat the process to find the rest of the hinge areas.
Step 5
Store the glove with a ball in the center between games.
Step 6
Repeat the oil application once a month to keep the glove in condition.
Tips and Warnings
- To clean a Kelley glove, wipe it down with a damp cloth. Do not use any soap; just use clear water. If the surface of the glove seems to dry out, rub it with olive oil. Store the glove in a dry place. If the glove gets wet, wipe the surface with a towel and then let it air dry.
- Keep the strings on the glove tight. If they come loose, undo the end knot and pull the string away from the glove surface. Retie the knot once the string is taut.
