Dunking the ball is an impressive maneuver, in part because so few players can do it. Dunking requires a combination of sufficient body height and vertical leap ability. The minimum height a player must jump to get the ball over the rim is 10 feet 6 inches.

Considerations

To measure the height of your current vertical leap, jump as high as you can and mark a wall. Subtract your height from the distance between the mark and the floor. A typical amateur basketball player has a vertical jumping height of 18 to 24 inches. To improve your vertical leap, perform leg strengthening exercises and practice jumping regularly. Make a mark on the wall and try to beat it every day. Although vertical leap does depend partly on body type and genetics, regular physical conditioning should improve your chances of performing of a successful dunk.

Palming the Ball

Palm the ball if possible. Holding the ball with one hand makes it easier to perform a dunk because it is easier to stretch one arm high than both. If you can't palm the ball, practice keeping the ball in the center of your hand while you whip it through the air to avoid losing control of it while you dunk.

Approach the Net

Sprint toward the rim from several yards away. The distance needed to generate maximum acceleration varies among different players, so experiment with different starting points to determine how close you need to be. Generally, requiring less distance is better because you will need less time to perform a successful dunk.

Performing the Dunk

Jump into the air by springing off the ground with both feet. You might be tempted to jump off one foot because it feels as if you can reach higher that way, but you need the combined power of both legs to achieve maximum height. Stretch your arm upward as high as you can and push the ball down through the net to complete the dunk.
