How to Incorporate Grocery Items Into the Nutrisystem Diet

Nutrisystem is a weight-reduction plan consisting of prepackaged food supplemented with produce and yogurt purchased from the grocery store. Weight loss is slow and gradual on Nutrisystem, at a rate of 1 lb. to 2 lbs. per week. The diet works because dieters adhere to a reduced-calorie diet, resulting in their bodies burning more calories than they consume.

Consult your physician prior to going on Nutrisystem or any other weight loss program.

Step 1

Incorporate a fresh fruit or vegetable serving with every Nutrisystem meal. Nutrisystem encourages dieters to enjoy a serving of fruit with breakfast and a non-starchy vegetable with lunch and dinner. You may choose to enjoy an apple, orange or pear with breakfast. Non-starchy vegetable options include lettuce, broccoli, string beans and spinach. Vegetables are very low in calories and high in nutrients, so feel free to eat a large serving with your meals.

Step 2

Add non-starchy vegetables to your pre-packaged Nutrisystem meals to increase nutrients and flavor without adding too many calories. Raw, steamed or boiled vegetables can be added to any meal.

Step 3

Snack on low fat dairy products, such as part skim string cheese, low fat yogurt or fat free cottage cheese. The Nutrisystem plan requires dieters to add two servings of dairy to their diets to ensure they consume enough calcium.

Step 4

Eat sugar-free gelatin for dessert if you find yourself battling the munchies. Sugar free gelatin contains very few calories. Nutrisystem allows up to 2 tbsp. of fat free whipped topping per day, which can be used to top your sugar free gelatin.
