Football can be played in a variety of weather conditions ranging from scorching heat to freezing cold. Extreme cold weather can present the most problems for football players. One of the main concerns during the cold is how to keep your hands warm. Football players use a few different methods to accomplish this both during plays and between plays.

Step 1

Wear gloves during the game to keep your hands warm. Gloves keep the cold off your hands and most players besides quarterbacks wear them during cold weather. Many players wear gloves at all times, but the cold weather simply gives them another purpose.

Step 2

Wear a hand warmer to further protect your hands, especially if you are a quarterback and do not wear gloves. Hand warmers are worn around the waist and some players turn them around to face behind them during game play, but they are designed to be worn facing forward at the belt. Players can put their hands in them between plays and while they are on the sideline to stay warm.

Step 3

Place heat packs in your hand warmer or jacket to keep your hands warm. Heat packs can be used in warmers, jackets or simply in your bare hands. The packs, once opened, can stay warm for up to seven hours, according to Sports Depot. A variety of companies manufacture some type of heat pack that can be used in football.

Step 4

Blow or breathe on your hands between plays to warm them up. This might not work as well in subfreezing temperatures, but blowing or breathing on the hands is often used at other times. Some players, especially quarterbacks, want to stay warm until the last possible second before the play begins.
