Volleyball drills are used in practice to improve a player's performance and develop good habits. A volleyball player can advance her skills through repetition using proper technique. Incorporating drills that enhance footwork, reaction time and ball control into a player's practice routine will make her a better player on the court.
Conditioning Drill
Have the players line up along the baseline, with the first person in line lying on their stomach. The coach or another teammate tosses a ball in play, the player lying on their stomach quickly gets up into passing position to make the play. The first toss should be easy, and as the player advances, the tosses should be more difficult. For example, make the player dive by tossing the ball away from the her or the coach can spike it so the player has to dig the ball. This drill improves reaction time and quickness to the ball.
Toss and Pass
The players partner with one volleyball per pair. One player tosses the ball to their partner, who returns it with a pass. Have the players repeat this drill several times to practice proper passing form. After each partner has had a turn passing, they can now pepper the ball, passing the volleyball back and forth to each other.
Serve to a Target
On the coach's signal, the player serves to the target that is set up on the opposite side of the net. Start by having the players serve close to the net and as the players develop more skill and accuracy, gradually have them back up to the baseline. The players should practice serving in different areas along the baseline as they advance.
Wall Hitting
Have the players stand facing a wall about 10 feet away. The player tosses the volleyball up to herself and then hits it to a target on the wall, using proper arm swing, bringing the arms up and then swinging as if she was going to attack the ball. This drill should be repeated several times to improve arm swing and hitting accuracy.
