Snowboarding often seems difficult to beginners, but it's really just a matter of getting comfortable with the necessary body movements. The best way to learn how to snowboard is to take a lesson from a professional. Once you have an idea of the basics, practice your moves on a beginner's slope.

Balance

One of the first skills you'll need to develop is balance. With your feet strapped securely into the snowboard straps, shift around to get a feel for how to maintain your balance. Don't be surprised if staying upright is difficult at first. Maintaining a low center of gravity will help you balance, so practice bending your knees to keep from falling.

Steering

Steering a snowboard isn't like steering a bike. To move from side to side, you must shift your body weight and angle your legs so the slippery board heads in the direction you want to go. This skill takes practice and time to develop. Experienced snowboarders can steer almost unconsciously because they are so familiar with the necessary movements.

Endurance

Although snowboarders seem to glide effortlessly down a slope, they actually use a significant amount of leg power to arrest their momentum. If snowboarders don't use lower-body power to resist their downward travel, they travel too fast and lose control, posing a risk to themselves and other people on the slopes. This is why snowboarders take a zig-zag pattern downhill, rather than a direct path.

Considerations

Over time, your skills will develop and your movements will become second nature. Until that time, however, it's best to limit yourself to gentle slopes. Don't overreach and attempt to tackle an advanced slope, or you risk injuring yourself and others. Wear proper safety gear, including warm clothing and a helmet, to maximize your safety.
