Whole grains are a good source of fiber, magnesium, potassium and selenium and can help prevent heart disease, high blood pressure and obesity. Brown and wild rice are delicious ways to include whole grains in your diet; they are easy to make and go well with almost any type of vegetable or meat. Brown and wild rice take about twice as long as white rice to cook, but they are well worth the effort. Letting brown rice cook slowly is the key to having it turn out fluffy and delicious.

Step 1

Measure out one cup of brown and wild rice and place it in a medium-sized pot.

Step 2

Add 2 cups of water or chicken broth to the rice.

Step 3

Add 1 tbsp. of butter and 1/2 tsp. of salt. If you are using chicken broth, you do not have to place additional salt in the rice.

Step 4

Bring the water to a boil over high heat.

Step 5

Cover the pot and turn the heat down to simmer once the water boils.

Step 6

Cook the brown and wild rice on simmer for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 7

Remove the rice from heat when all of the water is absorbed. For moister rice, remove the pot from heat when there is still a small amount of water left.

Step 8

Allow the brown and wild rice to stand for five minutes, still covered.

Step 9

Serve the brown and wild rice while hot.

Things You'll Need
