Kids can stay active and healthy by participating in team sports such as volleyball. Young children who are just learning the game need to be taught the basic fundamentals of volleyball such as serving, passing, hitting and handling the ball. Kids have limited attention spans so it is important to keep them engaged by keeping practice drills fun. Doing this enables them to learn the necessary skills to play the game, and instills a love for the sport.
Serve to the Cone
Set cones up randomly on one side of the net. Have the kids line up on the serving line on the other side of the net. Depending on how old the kids are, smaller kids can line up closer to the net. Point out a cone you want them to serve to and hit. Have one child serve at a time. This drill allows the kids to work on serving accuracy.
HIt the Wall
Give each kid a volleyball, and line them up facing a wall about 10 feet away. Place dots on the wall as hitting targets. The kids simply toss the ball to themselves and use the spiking arm motion to hit the target on the wall. This drill allows the kids to practice proper hitting mechanics and hitting accuracy.
Blocks on the Wall
In the game of volleyball, players are not allowed to touch the net when blocking the ball. To have the kids practice proper blocking techniques, line them up facing the wall. They should be close, but not quite touching. The kids should simply jump straight up as high as they can, touching the wall with the palms of their hands. As they come back down, their bodies should stay clear of the wall.
Bump Set Spike
Set the kids up in pairs, and give each pair one volleyball. The player holding the ball bumps the ball to his partner and his partner returns the ball using a set. He must set the ball high enough for his partner to spike it back. This drill allows kids to practice the hitting sequence most commonly used in a volleyball game.
