Bodyboarding has evolved into a sport on par with surfing in terms of trick technicality. Winners in competition are decided by the tricks and style incorporated in their performance. Drop knee bodyboarding is an advanced maneuver where you ride a wave sitting upright on the board in a kneeling position. You can combine the move with other tricks such as aerials, 360s and floaters.
Step 1
Paddle into a wave that has a clean break in the direction you're most comfortable riding.
Step 2
Push up with your arms and get into a kneeling position. Grab the rail of your board on the side where you are lifting up your leg. Hold your board steady and lift your leg and place your foot on the upper middle section of the board.
Step 3
Balance your leg's transition into a kneeling position with your arm by holding the rail steady.
Step 4
Sit up straight and use your arms to keep your balance. Press down with your foot on the nose of the board to pump down the wave and keep the tail steady using your knee.
Step 5
Ride out the rest of the wave. Use your hands and feet to spin the board for 360s and quicker turns.
Tips and Warnings
- Wearing a pair of fins can make catching and carving a wave much easier, but it can also make getting into the drop knee position more difficult. When performing drop knee with fins on, lift your leg up higher to compensate for the drag of the fins.
