The fruit from a fig tree has a rugged outer peel with jelly-like flesh on the inside that is surrounded by a mass of seeds and white rind. Roasted figs make a sweet addition to salads, tarts, pies, puddings and bread, or can be eaten on their own. You can usually find figs in most grocery stores or specialty shops, and preparation and roasting is not difficult.

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2

Cut a small "x" into the top of each fig, so that your knife almost reaches down to base.

Step 3

Set the figs in a roasting pan or dish so they are upright, with the "x" on top.

Step 4

Squeeze the sides of the figs with your hand so the flesh opens up a little.

Step 5

Add any extra flavors to the figs such as liqueur or wine and place the roasting pan in the oven. Roast the figs for 20 minutes, then remove them from the oven and add to your dish or serve them as they are.
