Before you head out into the wilderness on a backpacking adventure, make sure you have all the gear you need. Trying to squeeze everything you need to survive in the wild into a backpack is not very easy. Make a checklist beforehand so that you will remember all of the equipment essential to a fun and safe trek.

Tent and Gear

If you are backpacking on an overnight adventure, you are going to need something to sleep in. First of all you will want a tent. Make sure the tent is big enough to fit all hikers and important gear comfortably. Also be sure to pack all the essential spikes, stakes, lines and rope to properly pitch the tent. Consider bringing extra rope as well. Pack a sleeping bag, a sleeping pad and pillow to provide comfort on the hard ground.

Food and Gear

You are going to need food for energy while backpacking in the wilderness. Whether you bring in your own food or hunt, you are going to need equipment to prepare and cook. You may want to pack a camping stove and fuel for easy cooking. If you want to rough it a little, make sure you bring fire starting material like matches or flint. You will also need a pot, pan, cup, plate and utensils to cook and eat your food. If you have canned food, pack a can opener. Water is another necessity in the wilderness. Bring a canteen with you and water filter or treatment tablets to make sure your water is safe to drink.

Weather Protection

The weather is always unpredictable and unexpected when you are backpacking. Be ready for it. Pack extra clothing with you. A raincoat or poncho keeps your body dry. A fleece or sweater comes in handy if temperatures drop lower than you expect. Bring an extra pair of dry socks and some rugged weatherproof boots. Waterproof hiking pants keeps you dry in rain or snow. Also take sunglasses, lip balm, sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself against the heat of the sun.

Safety Gear

Even the most experienced backpacker can run into unforeseen problems. A GPS system is a nice luxury to have if you get lost in the wilderness. You may also want to carry a cell phone with you in case you need to phone for help. A flashlight with fresh batteries will be very important at night. Every backpacker should carry a sturdy knife and/or multi-tool to help with any number of survival tasks in the woods. You should also find room to store a first aid kit, aspirin and antibacterial soap in case of injuries. In the case of dangerous animals, you may want to pack some pepper spray or an air horn, to scare off any unwanted encounters. Bug spray comes in handy to keep biting bugs away.
