Volleyball video games can be a fun and challenging experience for teen gamers. Volleyball is a fast-paced sport that requires effective strategy to succeed. Teen gamers can use problem-solving skills and teamwork to overcome their opponents in a volleyball video game. Also, the typically alluring graphics and scenery in beach volleyball games can be appreciated by gamers at this age. Many beach volleyball games show beautiful sunshine, bright-colored sand and a view of the bright, blue ocean.

Background

NES Volleyball, created in 1986, was one of the earliest volleyball games for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), itself one of the earliest game consoles. Since then, games such as Super Spike V'Ball, Outlaw Volleyball and Summer Heat Beach Volleyball have been released for various gaming consoles. Volleyball games offer gamers a chance to play a sport that is not nearly as common as football, basketball or hockey. Some of the game consoles that feature volleyball games include the NES, XBox and Playstation 2. Most of these games are based on beach volleyball rather than indoor volleyball.

Super Spike V'Ball

Super Spike V'Ball was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in February 1990. The game allows you to compete in beach volleyball doubles tournaments for either the United States title or the World Cup. Teens can enjoy the challenge presented by the game's controls and the difficulty of the game's opponents. The game features a unique ability to spike the ball with incredible velocity that requires ample practice to time the play properly. Players must jump into the air and rapidly tap the jump button before unleashing the spike. This play is called a super spike. This particular volleyball game also requires strategy to win. Teen players will have to think of ways to outsmart their opponent when it comes to blocking balls at the net, serving and when to execute super spikes.

Outlaw Volleyball

Outlaw Volleyball is a beach volleyball game for the XBox which was released in July 2003. The game can only be played by those who are age 17 and older. The game features slapstick humor that can be found in many movies targeted at a teen audience. The game's crude humor and occasional overt sexuality can be appreciated by gamers between the ages of 17 and 19. Outlaw Volleyball features 16 different playable characters and 16 different volleyball courts to play on. The game also features the voice talents of Hollywood actor Steve Carell, star of The Office, a hit television show popular with young adults.

Summer Heat Beach Volleyball

Summer Heat Beach Volleyball is available for the Playstation 2 console. The game, released in July 2003, was produced by Acclaim Studios Cheltenham. Summer Heat Beach Volleyball supports up to four players at one time and features an arcade-style treatment of beach volleyball doubles. Arcade-style is a type of game play that stretches realism for entertainment purposes. This game also features some sexuality which is suited for a teen audience but not appropriate for younger players. The game's music also targets a teen audience featuring popular artists such as Pink and Sum 41. Summer Heat allows little room for error when executing volleyball plays, a feature that might be too difficult for players under 13 but perfectly suited for players in their teen years. Teen gamers can also unlock new outfits for their players and customize their player to their liking. Music videos have been popular with teens since MTV's origins in the early 1980s. Music videos can be unlocked in Summer Heat and can be enjoyed at any time.

Considerations

Do not attempt to purchase a mature-rated game if you are under the age of 17. Many stores where video games are rented or purchased do not allow underage consumers to purchase these games without parental consent. Also, more recent volleyball games such as Beach Sports Kinect for the XBox 360 will be more expensive than older titles such as Summer Heat Beach Volleyball.
