A number of medications are available for almost every medical condition you can think of, including hypertension, better known as high blood pressure. Although these medications are effective, it may take time to find the right one to manage your condition. You might find that natural methods, such as ayurveda, are as effective. Do not, however, stray from your doctor's treatment plan without consulting him first.
Hypertension
High blood pressure is often referred to as the silent killer due to its lack of signs or symptoms. Approximately 1 in 3 adult Americans has high blood pressure, increasing their risk of heart disease and stroke, the first and third leading causes of death in the United States, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For most adults, no specific cause exists, however, many risk factors have been identified. These include obesity, lack of physical exercise, excessive alcohol use, tobacco use and high stress levels.
Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a holistic type of healing many scholars believe to be the oldest healing science. Although practiced in India for over 5,000 years, its popularity has just recently grown in the Western culture. Its practitioners believe you can prevent and treat illness by achieving and maintaining balance between your body, mind and consciousness with proper food, drink, lifestyle and herbal remedies, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center. Ayurveda believes every person has one particular energy type, or dosha. Although your body has a component of all three, one is the most dominant in each person, and serves to control a specific bodily function.
The Link
When your dominant dosha is in balance, it serves a positive purpose, such as bodily growth for those whose dosha is Kapha. However, when this dosha is out of balance, the negative result is insecurity and envy. This is not the only result, though. Remaining out of balance leads to disease. Causes of interference of your energy source include stress, weather, unhealthy eating habits and poor relationships. UMMC states the practice of Ayurveda may reduce the risk of heart disease by reducing the buildup of plaque along the walls of your arteries. Although studies are underway for the efficacy of Ayurveda herbal remedies for the treatment of high blood pressure, various Ayurvedic treatments may help relieve the stress that causes blood pressure to rise.
Ayurveda Treatments
Pranayama is the practice of breathing exercises help calm you. Yoga may help reduce blood pressure and relieve stress and anxiety. Pancha karma helps cleanse and purify the body, possibly reducing cholesterol. When your cholesterol is lower, you reduce your risk of plaque buildup, which may reduce your blood pressure.
Warnings
Some herbs may react negatively with prescription medications, therefore, speak to your doctor before taking them. In addition, do not change your eating plan, especially if you are diabetic, until you first consult with your physician.
