Mangoes have plenty of uses in the kitchen. You can use them in fruit salad to add a tropical taste, add them to a fruit smoothie, dice them up for a chutney or sauce to top meats or simply eat them as a snack. The fruit provides lots of vitamin C -- 40 percent of the recommended daily intake in a half-cup serving -- and is also a good source of vitamin A. Before cutting into the fruit, though, make sure you understand how to peel it so you get the highest yield.
Step 1
Place the mango on the cutting board.
Step 2
Cut the mango lengthwise, so you are cutting parallel to the pit. Cut slightly off the center so you do not cut into the pit.
Step 3
Slice the mango lengthwise again, this time on the opposite side of the pit.
Step 4
Place the mango halves face down on the cutting board and cut them lengthwise into large slices.
Step 5
Remove the peel from each slice by sliding your knife carefully between the peel and the meat of the fruit.
Step 6
Continue preparing the mango as required for your recipe, or simply for snacking.
Tips and Warnings
- If you want to cut the mango into cubes for a recipe or for bite-size snacking pieces, score the mango flesh lengthwise and then crosswise, being careful not to cut all the way through the skin. Then push up gently on the skin and slice the bite-sized pieces of fruit off the skin. You can freeze cut mango pieces, but refrigerate the fruit for about an hour before moving it to the freezer.
