Buying a new treadmill means paying attention to its power, features, price -- and its weight. The weight of a treadmill can be an issue if you intend to place your new treadmill on the second floor or higher of an older home that has older ceilings and floors. It can also play a part in how difficult or easy it is to move the treadmill, especially if it does not fold up for easier mobility.
Motorized
Most motorized treadmills weigh at least 200 lbs., with their weight dependent on the type of components they have. The heavier treadmills often have a higher user weight capacity, although that is not always the case. Examples of treadmills with a user weight capacity of 350 lbs. include the Sole F80, which weighs 280 lbs., the NordicTrack A2750 Pro, which weighs 245 lbs. and the PaceMaster Platinum Pro VR, which weighs 205 lbs. The Landice L7 Pro Sports Trainer weighs 290 lbs. and has a user weight of 400 lbs.
Manual
Manual treadmills work on human power, rather than horsepower. Because they lack a motor they are usually much lighter than their motorized counterparts. Manual treadmills generally weigh less than 100 lbs. The Stamina InMotion T900 Manual Treadmill, for instance, weighs 52 lbs. It measures 47 in. long by 22 in. wide by 45 in. high, a size similar to many electronic treadmills.
Motor
The weightiest part of a treadmill is its motor and components, as evidenced by the weight difference between the motorized and non-motorized machines. Motorized machines contain a drive motor that pulls the drive belt and moves the walking deck as well as a computer control board that adjusts speed and incline. Manual treadmills lack the motor and the computer controls for the motor, although they can still come with a computerized console that usually runs on batteries and keeps track of distance, time and estimated calories burned.
Frame
The treadmill's frame also adds to its weight, with the heaviest frames being stainless steel. Treadmills that cost less than $2,000 usually have stainless steel frames, which is a less expensive yet heavier option than aluminum frames. Aluminum frames are as durable as stainless steel but are lighter and can better absorb shock, according to the American Council on Exercise. Treadmills with aluminum frames generally cost $2,000 or more.
