Gearing up for softball season requires a glove that meets the demands of your position. There is a difference between a glove and a mitt --- mitts have no finger slots. First baseman and catchers use mitts, which make it easier to collect a ball not squarely hitting the pocket. All other positions use gloves with some type of netting to scoop the ball. Depending on what position you play, you want a glove that is big enough, but not too big.

Step 1

Establish your position on the team. Outfielders use the largest gloves, between 13.5 and 14 in. from the top of the its index finger down to the heel, while infielders use smaller gloves, between 11.75 and 12.5 in. Utility players use a glove size between the two, often around 12.5 to 13.25 in., depending on the strengths of the player.

Step 2

Pick a glove size appropriate for your position.

Step 3

Slide the glove onto your hand. Hang the glove at your side; if it falls off, the glove is too big for your hand.

Step 4

Work the glove with your fingers, opening and closing it. Hit the netting with your free fist. Feeling as if you have no control over your fist --- a stand-in for the ball --- means the glove is too long.

Tips and Warnings

  • Most gloves have measurements on the tag. If yours doesn't, use a measuring tape from the top of the index finger down the side and to the inner heel of the glove. Some gloves have wrist adjustments helping secure the glove to your hand. This can help customize the fit.
  • Don't get a larger glove for a junior player in hopes she will grow into it. The difficulties in controlling the ball can discourage players to the point of giving up the game.
