Cheerleaders perform jumps during cheers, choreographed routines and when their team scores during a game. Although flexibility and height help you perform better jumps, proper form, technique and timing can also improve your cheerleading jumps. All jumps begin with the same preparation and landing. Perform a five minute warm-up and stretching routine before you begin jumping to avoid groin, knee or ankle injuries.

Step 1

Perform each jump on an eight-count.

Step 2

Clasp hands in front of your chest with your elbows tucked in for counts one and two.

Step 3

Raise your arms to a high V motion with your hands in fists on count three. Hold the high V for count four.

Step 4

Bend your knees and swing your arms down and across the front of your body for count five.

Step 5

Perform the jump on count six. Depending on the jump you choose, your arms and legs will hit the proper motions on this count. Common cheerleading jumps include a toe touch, side or front hurdler, herkie, tuck jump, pike, or spread eagle. Point your toes as you perform the jump.

Step 6

Land with your knees bend and feet together on count seven. Place your arms by your sides as you land to maintain balance.

Step 7

Stand up straight on count eight to complete the jump.

Tips and Warnings

  • Practice on a spring floor or trampoline to learn the technique and form of each jump. Land with your knees bent and feet as close together as possible. Perform stretching exercises to increase flexibility and the quality of your jumps.
  • Avoid practicing jumps if you have a knee, ankle or hip flexor injury.
