Skin allergies can include the conditions eczema, hives and allergic contact dermatitis, says the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Your skin may become red, itchy, bumpy or swollen, and sometimes it is hard to figure out what caused your allergic reaction. Some herbal treatments may help relieve these allergy symptoms. Before using these treatments, ask your doctor if they are safe for you to use and make sure your skin condition is an allergy, not a symptom of an underlying condition.
Calendula
Calendula is a plant that is also known as the flower marigold, and the flowers of the plant have been used for medicinal purposes since the 12th century, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, or UMMC. This herb contains flavonoids, which are plant chemicals that also act as antioxidants and help protect cells from damage. Despite the knowledge about flavonoids, the exact mechanism of healing that calendula exerts is not known, but it does have antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. For skin conditions such as dermatitis or allergic reactions, calendula can be applied topically, usually in an ointment that is 2 to 5 percent calendula, explains the UMMC. Apply this cream three to four times daily.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is a plant used to help treat a variety of conditions, including hemorrhoids, burns, fever and colds. Applied as a tincture or cream, this plant has astringent properties, helping to tighten up the skin proteins and promoting a cooling effect, says Drugs.com. This may also soothe dry and itchy skin allergies, as well as any inflammation. It is thought that these properties are because of the tannins in the leaves and bark of the plant.
Aloe Vera
Although many people use it for burns and sunburns, aloe vera may also be used for skin allergies, especially if the skin is itchy or inflamed. You can use the plant directly by squeezing out the clear gel from the inside of the plump leaves, or you can buy an aloe vera preparation at the drug store. MayoClinic.com warns that individuals who are allergic to garlic, onions or tulips may experience an allergic reaction to aloe, so these individuals should not use this herb for skin allergy relief.
Roman Chamomile
Roman chamomile is a plant whose flowers are used medicinally to help with digestive disorders, nausea and vomiting, sinusitis, joint problems and skin irritation. MedlinePlus explains that this herb can be applied right onto the affected skin areas to help reduce inflammation or pain and helps kill any germs that may be causing the irritation or allergy. This herb is also used to help treat eczema, diaper rash and other skin problems. If you are allergic to the ragweed family, including marigolds, daisies and chrysanthemums, do not use chamomile. Talk with your doctor to see if you are allergic to these plants before using this.
