Indoor cycling classes have made their way into almost every fitness center. If you enjoy these workouts, but a group exercise class is inconvenient due to time or distance, you can purchase an indoor cycling DVD. A video for beginners will give you a challenging workout, safe instructions and motivation.

Safety

An effective training video will include safety instructions. Your video should explain how to properly align your seat to protect your knees, hips and back from injuries. Certified trainers on the DVDs will include safety techniques, warm ups and cool downs during the video workout. For safe riding at home, position your bike directly in front of your video screen. This position allows you to keep your neck in alignment with your spine as you watch the instructor.

Variety

The video should offer variety for your workout. It should cover specific areas and goals, like endurance, energy, sculpting and training.

Duration

Consider how much time you have to dedicate to your workout before purchasing your first cycling video. Indoor cycling workouts can last from 30 to 60 minutes, so choose the video that fits best into your allotted time frame. If you enjoy doing the exercise three days a week, purchase longer video lengths for days when you have more available time and shorter videos for the days when you need a quick workout.

Modifications

As a beginner, you may not be able to perform all of the cycling movements. If the instructor on the DVD calls for an eight minute hill climb, and you can only complete four minutes, you will need an alternative video or exercise.
