An ace in volleyball is a serve that records a point for the serving team because the other team is unable to touch or return it before it lands inbounds on their side of the net. Aces are important because it enables the serving team to get an immediate point and hold service. There are several ways coaches and teams can benefit from a dominant server to get an ace.

Step 1

Set up your lineup so that your best player serves first. Players must rotate, with the other five players serving as well, so having the best player serve first and hunt for aces is a good strategy.

Step 2

Study game tape or scout your opponent to find weaknesses to attack in their defense. Look for how well players move and pass and their height.

Step 3

Look at your opponent's lineup or how they are set up before serving the ball. You may see an open place on the court to attack for your shot at an ace.

Step 4

Develop different types of serves, including the floater and the top spin. Top spins drop quickly, are tough to pass and can be especially effective and rare in women's volleyball. Floating serves do not spin as much and seem to dance from side to side in mid-air, which also makes them tough to return.
