Define Muscle Testing

Muscle testing is a kinesiology procedure that works with the nervous system to determine strengths or weaknesses in the body. It is based on the theory that the body contains an "innate spiritual intelligence" which is capable of communicating outwardly through the nervous system to the muscles. Since this is an unproven theory, it is best to consult your doctor before beginning a kinesiology program.

Origin

Developed in 1964 by a Michigan Chiropractor named George Goodhart, muscle testing, or applied kinesiology, has its roots in Chinese Medicine and the occult. Goodheart developed elaborate charts which showed the connection of specific organs to acupuncture meridians in the body. He then took his experiments further by examining how the addition of certain nutrients and herbs interacts with each system.

Procedure

When visiting an applied kinesiologist, you may expect him to perform muscle testing of your nervous system to determine where the weaknesses are in your bodily systems. Although there may be various methods used to test the body, a kinesiologist may begin by asking you to hold your dominant arm out straight in front of you. At this point he may then apply pressure to the outstretched arm. If the arm is easily pushed down, this indicates a weakness in a particular muscle system. If the arm holds strong during testing, it indicates strength of that particular system. The kinesiologist may even ask you to hold something like vitamins or supplements in your other hand to test if it is something that your body needs.

Self Testing

You can even perform simple muscle testing on yourself without the help of a kinesiologist. To do so, start with your non-dominant hand. Form a circle by touching your ring finger to your thumb. With your dominant hand, form an interlocking circle with the other. Try to use your dominant hand to pull apart the circle on the other hand. The theory of kinesiology is demonstrated when you ask yourself a "yes" answer question and are unable to pull the circle apart. If you ask yourself a question that has a "no" answer, you should be able to pull apart the circle with ease.

Precaution

Muscle testing is considered a form of alternative medicine and may not agree with the theories of traditional medicine. It is not intended to replace the treatment or diagnosis of a medical doctor but may be used instead to complement it.
