Christmas is a holiday that centers around celebrations full of food and drinks. The average person consumes 8,000 calories on Christmas Day, reports Body Chef. Many people overdo it during the holiday season and end up with unwanted pounds in the new year. It is possible to celebrate Christmas without gaining weight, and having a specific diet plan will help you do this.

Plan Ahead

Part of any good diet plan is being prepared for events where unhealthy foods will tempt you. If you know you will be attending a holiday party, eat lightly during the day so that you are able to enjoy a few treats without overdoing it on calories. By doing this, you are able to eat the things you like without putting on pounds at Christmas. It also prevents feelings of deprivation when you are surrounded by your favorite holiday foods by building the calories right into your meal plan. When you aren't at parties or Christmas events, eat low-calorie foods from each food group, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat dairy to satisfy hunger and prevent weight gain.

Eat Before a Party

If you show up to a Christmas party completely ravenous, you are more likely to make poor eating choices. On the way to the event, have a small snack to keep hunger at bay while still leaving room for the party food. Try string cheese and a handful of nuts or yogurt with granola. By taking the edge of your appetite, you can make good choices at the buffet line and enjoy a Christmas gathering without stuffing yourself full of junk food.

Watch Out for Beverages

Those sneaky Christmas drinks can put you over your calorie limit for the day and don't even fill your stomach or quench your thirst. Eggnog, champagne and punch are common culprits and are full of calories. Budgeting in the calories for one glass allows you to enjoy a favorite without gaining weight at Christmas. Add extra ice to your glass to cut back on the amount you end up drinking. Go for sparkling water or unsweetened iced tea the rest of the night. Choose low-calorie foods if you are opting for a high-calorie drink to keep your intake moderate.

Exercise

A healthy diet plan should incorporate plenty of exercise each day, which will help you burn calories for weight loss. If you overdo it at a party, add some extra time at the gym to counteract the effects of eating and drinking too much. Aim for at least 30 minutes each day and choose an activity you enjoy so that you are more likely to stick with it. Physical activity combined with healthy eating choices will both prevent weight gain at Christmas and could even help you drop a few pounds.
