MSM is a dietary supplement called methylsulfonylmethane. It is often paired with glucosamine and has several benefits. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that comes from certain citrus fruits and vegetables like peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, and greens. It can also be taken as a supplement. Before taking any supplements, be sure to speak with your family doctor.

MSM and Arthritis Pain

MSM is often taken for arthritis pain and inflammation reduction. A few small studies have suggested that MSM may reduce joint pain in people with osteoarthritis, but further research is needed. MayoClinic.com explains that overall, it is safe to take MSM for arthritis pain for up to 12 weeks. Side effects of MSM may include stomach upset, diarrhea and headache, so it is important to discuss dosage and recommendations for arthritis with your doctor.

MSM and Low Back Pain

About 60 to 80 percent of the adult United States population has low back pain and it is the second most common reason people go to the doctor, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Taking MSM can help prevent joint and connective tissue breakdown in the low back. Recommendations are to start with 3,000 mg of MSM twice a day. Talk with your doctor first regarding MSM intake and relief from low back pain.

Vitamin C and Colds

Large doses of vitamin C may help reduce the duration of a cold. It is important to note that vitamin C does not appear to protect against a cold in the first place. It only helps after exposure to a cold virus. If you are suffering from a cold, adult men can take 90 mg per day and adult women can take 75 mg per day. Taking extra vitamin C will not hurt the body because it is a water soluble vitamin, meaning that the body will flush out extra intake in the urine. If you are suffering from a cold, speak with your doctor about a good intake of extra vitamin C.

Vitamin C and Tissue Repair

Vitamin C is essential for the healing of wounds and for the repair and maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Vitamin C also helps the body absorb iron. People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, anemic, smokers, recovering from surgery or burn victims might need extra vitamin C for these tissue repair benefits. Be sure to get a dosage recommendation from your doctor if you have one of these conditions, or if you are in need of extra iron and tissue repair.
