Cod liver oil, like other fish oils, is a rich source of vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids, according to the UC Berkeley Wellness Guide to Dietary Supplements. It is thought to be therapeutic for arthritis, heart attacks and stroke, depression, Alzheimer's disease and cancer. In a study at the University of Tromsø, Norway, researchers found a connection between daily use of cod liver oil and a lower risk of death in women with solid tumors and lung cancer. More research is needed to clarify the connection, and you should consult your health care provider before using cod liver oil to treat cancer.
Step 1
Consult your health care provider to determine the correct daily dosage of cod liver oil for your type and stage of cancer. For cancer prevention, take the daily dosage per package instructions.
Step 2
Take cod liver in liquid or capsule form. The correct dosage for the liquid is 1 to 2 tsp. daily with food for adults, according to health website Healing Daily. Nutrition expert and best-selling author Dr. Ray Sahelian recommends taking one capsule of cod liver oil daily with food. You should always consult your physician and adhere to package instructions. Choose a brand that offers 100 percent natural cod liver oil from a pure source.
Step 3
Eat fresh or canned cod liver. This is a good source of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, according to researchers at the University of Agriculture in Szczecin, Poland.
