There isn't one simple, cookie-cutter mold for a good tennis shoe. What is good for you may not be so great for the next person, or vice versa. For example, if you have high arches, you'll want a shoe with a thicker mid-sole than someone who is flat footed.
Your intended activity can also impact the selection of a good tennis shoe.
Walking
According to Dr. James Korponay, a New York-based podiatrist, lots of bells and whistles don't necessarily equal a good walking shoe. When choosing a tennis shoe for walking, you want one that is built for comfort, flexible and lightweight.
After trying a number of walking shoes, testers with Good Housekeeping Research Institute picked the Nike Air Miler Walk as one of their top five walking shoes. Another shoe on the list was the Saucony Grid Instep RT.
Running
When choosing a running shoe, the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine recommends you weigh a number of factors, including current foot issues, environment and how far you plan to run. Fitness experts suggest that runners should typically replace their shoes every 350 to 550 miles. For some athletes, that could mean replacing shoes before they begin showing signs of wear.
Recommended running shoes include the Asics Gel-Evolution 5, the Brooks Infiniti 2 and the Adidas Supernova Sequence.
Toning
Toning tennis shoes often feature a "rocker" bottom, where the shoe's curved sole causes the wearer's foot to rock from heel to foot. According to podiatry experts, this motion can improve balance, muscle strength and increase the wearer's metabolism.
The American Podiatric Academy lists the Sketcher Shape Ups, the New Balance Rock and Tone and the Reebok Easy Tone as possible toning shoe selections. Earthshoe, Fitflops, Ryn, Springboost and Orthaheel all also manufacture toning shoes.
Training
Training tennis shoes are ones that can be worn in a variety of activities, including aerobics classes, running and walking. However, podiatry experts recommend getting a more specialized tennis shoe if you participate in a specific activity more than twice per week.
When selecting a training shoe, you want one that maximizes comfort while also providing stability. The Vibram FiveFingers KomodoSport Multisport Shoes, the Nike Air Max Trainer 1 and the Under Armour Incite Training Shoe may fit your needs.
