Cardiovascular Exercise
Cardiovascular exercise is necessary for burning calories and removing excess body fat. If you have fat tissue on your stomach, you need to work this off to get flat abs. Examples of cardio exercise include running, swimming, walking, step aerobics, hiking, jumping rope and rowing. Start out with as much time as you can do, even if it is only 10 or 15 minutes per day. Slowly increase the duration of your workouts until you can work for at least 30 minutes per day. Try to exercise at a moderate to intense pace that causes you to break a sweat but still allows you to hold a conversation.
Rebuild Muscle
During your surgery and the recovery period it is likely that your abdominal muscles were weakened. Using strength training exercises like crunches, flutter kicks, bicycles and the mason twist can help restore your strength, create a natural abdominal girdle and prevent fat tissue from developing on your stomach. The higher percentage of muscle tissue you have, the easier it is for your body to burn fat. You can train your abdominal muscles three to four times a week as long as you leave a day for rest in between each session. Complete eight to 12 repetitions for eight to 10 exercises during each session.
