Yoga requires the use of a mat, but the bags that mats come with are often bland. You need a yoga mat bag that lets you project your own style and personality. Making your own yoga mat bag will allow you to choose the colors and print of the bag. At the same time, the bag will be custom-fitted to your mat, so no more generic mat bags. Making mat bags is so easy, you may decide to make one to match how you feel on different days.
Prepare the Fabric
Step 1
Measure the perimeter and length of your yoga mat while it is rolled up.
Step 2
Cut the fabric and the lining. Cut one rectangle piece. The width will be equal to the perimeter plus 1 inch and the length will be equal to the length of the mat plus 2 inches. Cut one round piece of fabric for the bottom that is the same circumference as the rolled-up mat plus 1 inch. Repeat for the lining.
Step 3
Cut two strips of fabric for your strap. The strips should measure 34 inches long and 1 1/4 inch wide.
Sew
Step 1
Fold the strap fabric lengthwise with the right sides touching. Stitch the edge. Turn inside out and topstitch lengthwise down both sides.
Step 2
Fold the rectangle bag fabric, lengthwise with right sides touching. Stitch the long side. Begin 2 inches from the edge (this is end A) and continue to the opposite end (this is end B). Turn right side out.
Step 3
Mark 5 inches from end A. Pin one end of your strap at this mark. Stitch the strap to the right side of the bag. Use the zigzag stitch for reinforcement.
Step 4
Turn the bag inside out. Pin the circle piece to the bag's end B, right sides touching. Reach inside the bag to grasp the loose end of the strap. From within the bag, insert the strap end between the end circle and the bag end B. Stitch the pieces together and continue to stitch around the circumference of the circle. Turn right side out.
Step 5
Stitch the lining in the same way as your bag fabric. Stitch the rectangle lining piece all the way down the edge without leaving an unstitched section. Assemble as with the bag fabric. Insert your lining in the bag.
Step 6
Fold 1 inch of end A of the bag to the inside. This will form the casing for your ribbon, which is the drawstring. Stitch. Leave the ends of the casing open at the unstitched portion of the bag body. Thread the ribbon through one end of the casing. This is your drawstring.
Tips and Warnings
- Embellish with your own ideas and trinkets. Use a quilting weight or light weight cotton. Heavier weights can make your bag stiff.
- Choose fabric that is easy to launder since you will be using the bag often.
