How Do Hair Products Affect Hair Growth?

Minoxidal

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) an individual strand of hair lives for approximately 4.5 years. Hair that falls out is replaced by a new strand. The fullness and amount of hair tends to wane with aging. Hair loss can also be due to genetics. The NIH says partial or total hair loss is called alopecia. The Food & Drug Administration has approved the topical hair growth product minoxidal (Rogaine) for the treatment of alopecia.
Minoxidil is a foam or liquid that you massage into your scalp two times per day. It is intended to encourage hair growth and prevent additional hair loss. It may take three months for new hair growth to begin and it may be shorter and finer than your former hair. Minoxidil is a non-prescription medication that can be purchased in a 2 percent or 5 percent solution.

Anthralin

The FDA has also approved prescription-only Anthralin (Dritho-Scalp) for alopecia. Anthralin comes in both ointment and cream form. This synthetic substance has a tarry texture that is rubbed into your scalp and washed off once a day. According to the Mayo Clinic, Anthralin may encourage new hair growth for cases of alopecia areata (patchy baldness). As with minoxidil, it can take as long as 12 weeks to see results.

Profinast

According to Top Consumer Reviews.com, Profinast is promoted as an herbal form of Finasteride Finasteride is an FDA-approved prescription pill to treat male-pattern baldness. Profinast contains a mixture of herbs, vitamins and nutrients intended to curb hair loss in men and advance the regrowth of hair. ReGrow Plus

ReGrow Plus comes in liquid formula and is mixed with water or juice. It is to be consumed daily. This product is said to encourage hair regrowth through improved circulation, hormonal balance and an improved immune system. ReGrow Plus contains ginkgo biloba and rosemary which, according to Native Remedies.com, have positive effects on the body's circulatory system, and field horsetail, which is said to support hair and nail health.
