Watching your calories and eating healthy does not mean you have to do without hamburgers. You can cook a hamburger at home without frying it on top of the stove by baking it in the oven instead. Start with lean ground beef, which has less fat and calories. The ingredients you mix into your ground beef are equally important for cooking a juicy and flavorful burger.
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2
Put 1 1/2 lb. of lean ground beef in a large mixing bowl.
Step 3
Gather the ingredients you will use to flavor and season your hamburger. Some cooks like a sprinkle of pepper with a few onions or a dash of steak sauce. Others, especially those with families to feed, extend the ground beef with fillers, such as bread pieces or uncooked oatmeal. You may choose to add chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, or other spices for a more flavorful burger. If you prefer a little salt, add it after the burger is cooked to avoid loss of moisture.
Step 4
Mix the ingredients thoroughly into the ground beef, shape the mixture into six patties and place the patties on a rack set inside of the baking pan. Line the bottom of the baking pan with aluminum foil for easy clean-up, if you prefer.
Step 5
Place the baking pan in the middle of the oven and bake for 20 to 30 minutes. Turn the hamburgers after 10 minutes of cooking and break one in half at 20 minutes to check for pinkness at the center.
Step 6
Remove the hamburgers from the oven when done, and allow them to sit for about five minutes before serving.
Tips and Warnings
- Substitute ground turkey for a healthier burger with a different flavor. Ground chicken also makes a good burger in the oven. Countertop ovens and grills also cook burgers without frying, while allowing the fat to drain.
