Sold over the counter without a prescription, fish oil supplements are easily accessible. Adults take fish oil supplements more than any other vitamin, mineral or dietary supplement on the market, reports ConsumerLab.com's February 2010 survey. Many people consume the supplement for heart and cardiovascular benefits. Fish oil is regarded as a safe supplement for most people; however, there are still warnings and risk when taking it. Discuss taking fish oil supplements with your health care provider before add the supplement to your daily schedule.

Bleeding

Taking large doses of fish oil supplements may cause excess internal and external bleeding. The supplement should not be taken in doses of 3 g or more, unless approved by a medical doctor, advises MedlinePlus. There is little risk of bleeding when taking low doses of the supplement, according to MayoClinic.com. You may suffer from nosebleeds, blood in your urine or bowel movements and bruising of the skin. You may notice bleeding from your gums when brushing your teeth. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention.

Gastrointestinal Effects

Fish oil may cause you to experience a variety of gastrointestinal side effects. You may feel abdominal cramps or pain. Diarrhea is common when taking the supplement, and high doses of fish oil may cause severe episodes. Fish-like aftertaste is often experienced, as well as an increase in burps and belching. Avoid gastrointestinal effects by taking small doses of the supplement and gradually increasing to your desired dose. Take the daily supplement with meals or heavy snacks for increased absorption, and to decrease side effects.

Hemorrhagic Stroke

In very rare circumstances, large doses of fish oil may cause bleeding in your brain. Ruptured arteries cause a hemorrhagic stroke to occur. The condition is life-threatening and immediate medical attention is necessary. Signs of a hemorrhagic stroke include difficulty following directions, slurred speech and loss of consciousness.

Additional Warnings

Not everyone can safely take fish oil supplements. If you are allergic to seafood, there is a risk you will also experience an allergic reaction to fish oil supplements. Signs of an allergic episode include hives, swelling of the throat, lips and mouth. Patients with a heart defibrillator are highly discouraged to take a fish oil supplement. The fish oil may increase the amount of irregular heart rhythms you experience. If you are prescribed anticoagulant or antihypertensive medications take extra caution. Fish oil may intensify the drug's effects to dangerous levels.
