Lacrosse transition drills are designed to help you and your teammates move down the field in a quick and effective manner. Transitions are one way to get into scoring position off of a defensive stop. Transitions are pivotal to scoring in the game, especially in the final minutes.
Front of Ball Drill
This drill is designed to make sure that you stay in front of the ball during a transition. Line up with three other players in a straight line. On your coach's whistle, begin running towards the center of the field. If you are in the middle, pass the ball back and forth to your teammates. The first teammate you pass to should accelerate to be in front of you. Once he catches it, have the other teammate speed up to get in front of him. Continue accelerating to get in front of each other until you have reached the other side of the field.
Small Field Chaos Drill
This drill is designed to improve your transition skills by decreasing the size of the field. Place two cages, 30 yards apart from each other. Have lines of three offensive players and four defensive players take shape on opposing sides of the field. On your mark, have the offensive players break out into a transition. Simultaneously the first defenders in each line should start running in an effort to disrupt the transition. Have the offense continue the transition until they have taken a shot on goal.
Coverage Drill
This drill is designed to make sure that everyone transitioning down the field is covered. Stand in a line of three other players. On your coaches whistle, begin running down the field with the ball and the rest of your players at your sides. Instead of passing the ball in the transition, run directly at a player on the defense. The goal of this drill is to dry and get a defender on you, allowing someone else on your team to transition down the field. As soon as a defender locks onto you, pass the ball to a teammate.
Split Field Drill
This drill is designed to get offensive players to react quickly and defenders to rotate quickly in an effort to stop a transition. Have three offensive players lie on there stomachs a few feet from two defenders. Roll a ball in between the players. As soon as the ball is rolled, have the offensive players jump up and grab the ball. As the players pass the ball back and forth, have the defenders attempt to intercept the passes, by rotating in between each pass. Continue this until a ball is intercepted.
