Lacrosse finishing drills are designed to improve your ability to score when close to the goal. While many involve careful timing and planning with other teammates, several finishing drills can be performed in isolation. In addition to improving your finishing skills, finishing drills will indirectly improve your timing and passing accuracy.
One Feeder Finishing Drill
This drill is designed to help you adjust to good and bad passes while cutting for a finish. Get your team in a straight line to the right side of the goal. Stand at the left of the goal with a stick in the feeding position. On your whistle, have a player run to the center of the field. As he runs, feed him with a quick pass. Have him catch and shoot the ball on goal. As you pass to each player in line, attempt to vary your pass angles and positioning, making it more realistic for the players in the drill.
Quick Stick Shooting
This finishing drill is designed to increase your speed and scoring chances. Stand two feet away from a teammate with a stick in your hand. Have your partner toss the ball to your stick side. Catch the pass back behind your head. As soon as the ball is in the head of your stick, rotate your arm forward, without cradling the ball, and pass the ball back. After you get it down with a partner, try performing a quick stick at the goal.
Cross Crease Finishing
This drill is designed to improve your finishing in the crease. Divide your team into two lines, one on the left side of the goal and one on the right. Have one player from the left lane run to the crease. Have a player from the right lane pass her the ball. As soon as she catches it, instruct her to score. After shooting on goal, have the player who passed the ball run to the center crease and catch a pass from the player in the left lane. Repeat the pattern until everyone has passed and shot.
Wall Ball
This solo drill will improve your speed with the stick and ability to finish near the goal. Stand two feet in front of the wall with a ball in the head of your stick. Perform a finishing shot directly at the wall. Try to throw it at such a velocity that the ball comes directly back to you. Perform this 20 times in a row, trying to get the ball to come back to you at different angles.
