How to Lose Weight by Taking Oil

Many people claim that ingesting oil has helped them lose significant amounts of weight. According to Martha Belury, associate professor of human nutrition for the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and the College of Education and Human Ecology, there is not enough evidence to prove this claim. For those who have tried countless diets without success, it is important to realize that weight loss can only be achieved by burning more calories than you consume. Still, adding oil to your daily diet can improve your overall health and may potentially help you lose excess weight.

Step 1

Choose and purchase oil. Olive oil is the most common type of oil consumed for weight loss. It is high in essential fatty acids that raise HDL (good cholesterol) and lower LDL (bad cholesterol) levels. Choose light extra virgin olive oil because it is pure olive oil and contains fewer calories. Olive oil loses its beneficial properties when heated, so store it in a cool dark place. Coconut oil is another oil that is used for weight loss. It is higher in saturated fat, but this makes it less prone to heat damage. Other options include Canola oil, fish oil and flaxseed oil.

Step 2

Take at least one tablespoon of oil each day. The oil helps you feel satisfied and curbs your appetite so you do not overeat. The oil also helps improve your digestive system and eliminate excess waste. It is also believed to speed the metabolism to encourage further weight loss. Some people take a tablespoon of oil 20 minutes before each meal to help them avoid eating too much at a meal. Oil is high in calories, so it is prudent to count calories. Determine if three tablespoons of oil in addition to your meals is more calories than your burn daily; if so, stick with one tablespoon daily.

Step 3

Try the Shangri-La diet. This is a diet invented by Seth Roberts, professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, who is also on the editorial board of the journal Nutrition. In addition to consuming a tablespoon of olive oil daily, Roberts drinks a cup of sugar water between meals. He says it suppresses his appetite and enabled him to lose 35 pounds. Roberts and others who have tried the diet have enjoyed success, probably because the oil and sugar water curb cravings and do not leave the dieter feeling deprived, giving him more control over food choices.
