Quitting smoking will improve your health and reduce your risk of developing lung cancer and emphysema -- unfortunately, it may also cause you to gain weight. Smoking suppresses the appetite and may also speed up the metabolism. After quitting smoking, it's not uncommon to gain a few pounds. You can lose weight even when you quit smoking by practicing portion control, exercising and eating healthy foods. Talk to your doctor before starting a new diet or exercise program, particularly if you have health conditions or injuries.
Step 1
Munch on unsalted popcorn, carrot sticks or celery sticks when you're craving a cigarette. Instead of reaching for a candy bar or a bag of chips, eat crunchy, low-calorie foods that will keep you occupied without packing on too many calories.
Step 2
Go for a walk when you crave a cigarette. Walking will help burn extra calories, and it will keep smoking off your mind. Exercise increases your heart rate, which may help reduce cravings.
Step 3
Reduce your portions of meat and side dishes like pasta, bread or rice -- add extra veggies and fruit to your meal instead. Fruit and vegetables will fill you up, while adding minimal calories. This way, you can eat a full plate of food without adding pounds to your frame.
Step 4
Get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day to reduce stress, lose weight and reduce your cravings. Exercises like swimming, running, biking and basketball will burn extra calories, keep you healthy and take smoking off your mind.
Step 5
Talk to a friend or family member on the phone when you're craving a cigarette -- and walk around the house while you're talking. Walking around the house will burn a few extra calories, and your friend may offer words of support that will keep you from picking up a cigarette.
Tips and Warnings
- Smoking may inhibit your sense of smell and taste -- when you quit, you may notice that food tastes better and you're more interested in eating.
- Consult your doctor if you feel severely depressed or anxious after quitting smoking. (Reference 1)
