How to Make a Toddler Bed From a Crib Mattress

A common baby item that is often converted to a toddler or small child item is a crib mattress. "Consumer Reports" offers several tips for parents wishing to eventually transition a baby from crib to bed in the most comfortable and supportive environment possible. Quality is important to every parent when it comes to choosing the right bed not only for themselves, but for all members of the household. Learn how to choose the right crib mattress to ideas on how to arrange a toddler bed for both comfort and function.

Step 1

Check for firmness of a mattress. "Consumer Reports" suggests purchasing a firm mattress for longevity and support. Test a mattress by pressing down in the center of the mattress. A firm mattress will bounce back immediately when it's let go. Test the edges of the crib mattress the same way.

Step 2

Select a dual firmness mattress for conversion from crib to toddler bed. Such mattresses can be pricey (a little over $200) but are well made. Such mattresses are convertible, offering a firm side for infants and a memory foam side for toddlers. However, firm crib mattresses will convert to a toddler bed as long as it doesn't retain the shape of a body or hand if pressed into the surface of the mattress.

Step 3

Place the crib mattress on the floor or in a small, low-to-the-ground bed when transitioning the child from crib to bed or make or purchase a bed guard rail for safety's sake. Toddlers love adventure, so make the bed area comfortable, fun and safe. Bedding and wall decorations around the bed in pirate themes, cartoon characters and superheroes are toddler favorites and will help make the transition easier for child and parent.

Step 4

Locate the toddler bed in the same location as the crib if possible to help ease the transition from crib to "real bed." Let the toddler help choose bedding and pillows and encourage and praise your child for making the transition. Lie on the bed with your child during nap time before the crib is removed from the room to help your child become accustomed to the bed.
