Losing weight is a simple mathematics formula: eat fewer calories than you burn and you'll lose weight. Unfortunately, the concept is much easier said than done when adding in the sum of a busy schedule, diet temptations and an aversion to daily exercise. Still, your math skills needn't be the only thing tested when you lose weight. You can use your imagination and visualization skill to help you stay motivated and achieve the weight-loss goals that you set for yourself.

Setting Goals

The first step to healthy weight loss involves setting realistic goals that will help motivate you to stay on track. Creating tangible goals can help you better visualize the way you'll feel when you achieve them. For instance, if your goal is to lose two pounds per week, see yourself stepping on the scale at the end of the week. Visualize the numbers on the scale falling as you continue exercising. Then, visualize yourself checking a goal off of your checklist and moving onto the next one.

Staying Motivated

Getting up early to exercise on a daily basis can be difficult, especially if you have a tiring and hectic schedule. Instead of hitting the snooze button and going back to bed, take a few minutes to picture the way you'll feel once your workout is over. You'll be glad to get it out of the way and feel more energized. If you workout at night, picture the consequences of staying home and watching television versus the success of working out and how that will make you feel about your body and your resolve.

Creating Rewards

One of the fastest ways to motivate yourself is to imagine the rewards you'll reap when you achieve your weight-loss goals. Imagine the social, emotional and physical rewards you'll achieve with weight loss. Everything from being more comfortable around other people to feeling better about yourself and feeling better in a swimsuit can help you stay motivated. If imagining the intangible rewards isn't enough, schedule tangible rewards for yourself, like a pedicure or book. Taping a picture of your reward where you can see it frequently can help you remember why you're losing the weight.

Negative Visualizations

While taking the time to create positive visualizations for yourself, it may be helpful to imagine some of the negative repercussions of not losing the weight. For instance, you can imagine yourself dealing with the health issues that typically affect the overweight, such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease. You may also picture yourself doing the things that you hate to do because you're overweight, like going to the beach. Having those negative visualizations in the back of your mind may help you to push yourself harder to make better diet choices and exercise more.
