Doxycycline is a medication used to treat bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and periodontitis (gum infections). Gastrointestinal Side Effects

According to RxList.com, doxycycline can harm your digestive system and lead to nausea, vomiting, dysphagia (trouble swallowing), diarrhea and inflammation of your genital and anal region. In rare cases, doxycycline can cause esophagitis (food tube infection) and esophageal ulcers. Call your doctor when you experience any of these symptoms.

Effects on Your Skin

Avoid exposing yourself to sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light such as with tanning beds when using doxycycline. This medication may cause your skin to become extremely sensitive to the extent that frequent sunburns may develop, states Drugs.com. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing and apply sunblock with a sunscreen protection factor of at least a 15.

Effects on Your Blood

Doxycycline can also affect the components that make up your blood. You may develop low platelet (substance in your body responsible for clotting), hemolytic anemia (destruction and therefore decrease of your red blood cells), eosinophilia (increase in substances that help quell an allergic response) and neutropenia (inability of your bone marrow to make cells that fight against infection).

Allergic Reaction

In some instances, you may develop an allergic response to doxycycline. According to Drugs.com, these symptoms include trouble breathing, hives and swelling of your face, throat or lips. Go to your local hospital immediately when you develop this symptoms.

Tooth Discoloration

According to RxList.com, doxycycline can change your teeth to a gray, yellow or brown color especially if it is used during pregnancy and in children up to eight years old. Avoid doxycycline during pregnancy and do not give this medication to your child.
