Foods That Hurt Your Acid Reflux

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acids back up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the through and chest. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) reports that this can be caused by weak stomach sphincter muscles, or by a hiatal hernia. Lifestyle changes can often help control reflux symptoms, including weight loss, quitting smoking and avoiding certain foods.

Fast Foods and High Fat Meats

Foods that are high in oils and fats can make acid reflux worse. These include foods that are deep fried, as well as certain types of fast food like fried chicken or french fries. According to Jackson Siegelbaum Gastroenterology, high fat meats (such as sausage and bacon) can also cause reflux symptoms. Eating a diet that is high in fast foods and fatty meats can hurt your acid reflux. Instead, opt for lower fat items such as grilled chicken, fish or turkey.

Hot and Spicy Foods

Hot and spicy foods are another common culprit of acid reflux symptoms. The NDDIC recommends against making foods too "hot" (such as with chili peppers), as well as the use of garlic and onions for seasoning, as these can hurt your acid reflux. Mints such as peppermint and spearmint should also be avoided. This does not mean you have to eat bland foods. Experiment with other seasonings, and you can still enjoy what you eat without the familiar burning sensation of acid reflux.

Whole Milk Products

Whole milk products can also cause acid reflux symptoms in some people. Jackson Siegelbaum recommends swapping out whole milk for skim or 1 percent. Other dairy products with a high fat content include some cheeses, ice cream and pudding. If you must have them, switch to lower fat varieties to decrease your acid reflux symptoms. The NDDIC reports that chocolate is another common ingredient that causes acid reflux symptoms, which means all types of chocolate milk (even low fat) should be avoided.

Acidic Fruits

Fruits that have a high acid content, such as citrus, can also hurt acid reflux symptoms in some people. This includes fruit juices as well. Oranges, lemons, grapefruits and pineapple (and their juices) should all be avoided by people with acid reflux. In addition, it is wise to check other products for citrus ingredients, such as juice blends and certain types of marinades, that might increase acid reflux symptoms.

Tomato Products

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine lists tomatoes as a major cause of acid reflux symptoms. This not only includes raw tomatoes, but tomato-based products as well. According to the NDDIC, tomato sauces such as those found on pasta and pizza can also hurt acid reflux. Salsas and tomato-based chili should be avoided as well.

Caffiene and Alcohol

Certain beverages can also cause acid reflux symptoms in some people. According to the NDDIC, these include caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. Sodas that contain caffeine, as well as coffee and some energy drinks, can all aggravate acid reflux symptoms. Alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer should also be avoided by people with acid reflux.
