Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are commonly recommended by nutritionists such as Nancy Clark, who believe that the densely packed calorie content of the sandwiches can help individuals gain weight or bulk up. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends that individuals looking to increase their muscle mass need to consume 0.68 grams of protein per pound of body weight. If you weigh 150 lbs., you will need a total of 102 grams of protein daily. According to LIVESTRONG.COM MyPlate, one peanut butter and jelly sandwich contains 300 calories with 11-1/2 g of protein, or roughly 10 percent of the daily recommended protein for a 150-lb. person.

Step 1

Take two pieces of bread and set them on a plate.

Step 2

Dip a knife in peanut butter.

Step 3

Spread the peanut butter on side of one piece of bread until covered.

Step 4

Clean the knife with a napkin.

Step 5

Dip the knife into the jelly jar.

Step 6

Spread jelly on one side of the slice of bread not covered by peanut butter.

Step 7

Combine the two pieces of bread.

Step 8

Consume sandwich prior to bedtime.

Step 9

Repeat nightly until your desired weight is reached.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are not gaining weight with just one sandwich at night, you may add a glass of milk or eat another sandwich to increase your caloric intake. You may also consume the sandwich as a midday snack if eating two sandwiches prior to bedtime is too much food for your stomach to handle.
  • If you have gluten, lactose, peanut or fruit allergies, you should avoid eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to bulk up. Consult with your doctor and nutritionist for safe alternatives.
