Morton's neuroma is a thickening of the nerve tissue between your third and fourth toes. This condition may also be referred to as intermetatarsal neuroma. The location of the neuroma is often in the ball of your foot. This condition can result in pain and irritation. Permanent nerve damage can occur if it is not treated. One treatment for Morton's neuroma is surgery to decompress the nerve. Following surgery, physical therapy is required to regain strength in your affected foot.
Pencil Lifts
Help to strengthen and improve the function of your foot following surgery by performing pencil lifts. Sit down and position a pencil just below your bare foot. Pick the pencil up by gripping it between your toes and the ball of your foot. Hold the pencil for five seconds. Relax and repeat 10 times. Complete this exercise three times per day for maximal results.
Toe Walking
Toe walking can help restore strength in your foot following Morton's neuroma surgery. Stand barefoot with your feet positioned shoulder-width apart and rise up onto your toes. Walk on your toes for 15 to 20 seconds at a time. Rest for 20 seconds and repeat eight to 10 times. Try to complete this exercise two times each day.
Toe Spreads
Toe spreads can help reduce pain and increase the function of your foot. This exercise can be completed seated or standing. Position your affected foot flat on the ground. Spread your toes apart as far as they can comfortably go. Return to the starting position and repeat. Complete two sets of 10 repetitions. Aim to complete toe spreads three times per day.
Plantar Fascia Stretch
Stretch the bottom of your foot with a plantar fascia stretch. Your plantar fascia is the thick band of tissue that runs from your heel bone to your toes. Stretching the bottom of your foot can help alleviate pain and increase flexibility. Sit down and cross your affected leg so that your calf is resting on the thigh of your healthy leg. Use your hands to gently pull your toes backward. You should feel a stretch in the bottom of your foot. Hold this position for 30 seconds. Relax and repeat three times.
