Wheatgrass provides several nutrients, such as vitamins A, C, and E, chlorophyll, iron, magnesium and calcium, as well as amino acids. However, medical research hasn't shown evidence that wheatgrass promotes weight loss. Even though it may not help melt away excess pounds, wheatgrass can be part of a healthy diet and exercise program.

Step 1

Start a food diary that lists the foods you normally eat on a daily basis. Include meals, snacks, drinks and candies. Use a calorie counter to determine the amount of calories in each of the items you consume. Pay close attention to serving size, adding up the total amount of calories for several days to help you determine your daily average.

Step 2

Subtract 500 calories from your daily total. Use the remaining amount as the goal for your daily caloric intake, limiting your intake to this amount. By cutting back 500 calories per day, you can lose about 1 pound of fat every week. Gradual weight loss is safer and often more permanent than fad dieting that causes rapid reduction.

Step 3

Select healthy sources of nutrients -- including wheatgrass -- to include in your daily diet. Determine the amount of calories and the serving sizes of foods such as whole grains, fat-free dairy products, lean meats, fresh fruits, legumes and vegetables. Create a daily menu, keeping your overall intake of calories within your limitations. Include two to three daily servings of wheatgrass juice in your diet menu, calculating seven calories for each 1-ounce serving.

Step 4

Drink the wheatgrass juice on an empty stomach or your meals. Follow the supplement with a glass of water to hydrate your body and minimize any aftertaste.

Step 5

Incorporate at least 20 minutes of exercise into your daily routine. Select activities you enjoy, such as tennis, bicycling, walking and swimming. Regular exercise can help take your mind off food and encourage your body to burn additional calories. Reward yourself after your workout with a glass of diluted wheatgrass juice over ice or in a fruit smoothie, recording the calories in your daily food diary.

Tips and Warnings

  • Some wheatgrass juices contain honey or other added sweeteners and flavors to improve the taste of this supplement, but these additions add calories and reduce the amount of other foods you can consume during the day. Rather than adding high-calorie ingredients, try mixing your wheatgrass juice with herbal tea to help minimize any unpleasant flavor.
  • Talk to your doctor before beginning any new diet and exercise routine, especially if you have a health condition or illness. Avoid taking wheatgrass supplements if you have any known allergies to grass or if you are pregnant or nursing, advises MayoClinic.com. Also avoid using this supplement if you are gluten intolerant or have celiac disease.
