It is important to exercise all the major muscle groups in your body. If you have a history of leg problems you will want to choose an exercise that won't cause those problems again. The elliptical machine allows you to exercise using the same body mechanics as running but without the high impact.

Major Muscle Groups

While exercising on the elliptical machine you can use all the major muscle groups for a complete workout. The arm component gives you an effective workout for the upper body, while the striding action works all of the major muscles of your legs. Your feet do not leave the foot pedals during exercise which means that there is only minimal impact to your joints.

Knee Problems

Knee problems can include osteoarthritis, total knee replacement or tendon damage. If you have had problems with your knees you will want to choose an exercise with very little impact to your joints. Elliptical machines can provide a smooth and gentle rotation of the knee joint ensuring that you are able to keep full mobility.

Ankle Problems

If you have had injuries or damage to your knees you will want to minimize further problems. Both of your feet remain on the elliptical foot pedals throughout your stride and your posture remains consistent. This lack of foot movement while exercising provides good stability to your ankles.

Muscle Problems

Muscle problems may include pulled muscles, bruising or cramps. Due to the elliptical machine's smooth and controlled rotation it is a good choice for you to consider using as you recover from an injury from another form of exercise.

Consult Healthcare Provider

Before considering using the elliptical machine, talk to your health care provider about its use in relation to your past leg problems. If you experience sharp pain at any time while exercising on the elliptical machine, stop exercising and consult your doctor.
