Metformin Side Effects

Metformin is commonly sold under the brand names Glucophage, Fortamet, Glumetza and Riomet. It is used to control type 2 diabetes ( a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels) by maintaining normal blood glucose (sugar) levels, according to Drugs.com. Tell your doctor whether you have a history of liver or heart disease, because your doctor may need to adjust metformin's dosage to prevent the development of side effects.

Lactic Acidosis

According to RxList.com, metformin may lead to the development of lactic acidosis (a condition of increased lactic acid in your blood). Symptoms of lactic acidosis may include fatigue, muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain and drowsiness. You may also experience hypotension (low blood pressure) and slow and irregular heart rhythms called bradyarrythmias. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms, because lactic acidosis is a medical emergency.

Overdose

Overdosing on metformin can lead to signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). According to Drugs.com, you may also experience headache, confusion, dizziness, weakness, hunger or convulsions. Your heart may beat faster (tachycardia) and you may develop fainting spells or go into a coma. It is crucial you seek prompt treatment in order to reverse these dangerous side effects.

Other Physical Side Effects

RxList.com states that metformin may also lead to abnormal stools, muscle pain, increased sweating and chills. Users can also develop flushing, palpitations, lightheadedness and changes in the appearance of their nails.

Allergic Reaction

In some instances, you may develop an allergic reaction to metformin's ingredients. Itchy red bumps over part or entire regions of your body may develop. These are called hives. You may have trouble breathing if your throat closes up. Metformin can also lead to swelling of your face and lips. Go to your local emergency room to seek immediate treatment to reverse these potentially life-threatening symptoms.
