How to Make a Cheap Chocolate Cookie Crust for a Pie

A chocolate cookie crust creates an ideal shell for non-baked pies, like chocolate pudding. This crust is also an option for cheesecakes. Making your own chocolate cookie pie crust may save you money over purchasing one that is already made. You also know the crust is fresh rather than having sat around on a shelf for weeks or months before you buy it. The crumb crust method works with a variety of chocolate cookie types, including wafer, shortbread or sandwich cookies.

Step 1

Break up the chocolate cookies into small pieces to make about 2 cups. Pour the cookie pieces into a food processor or the cup of a blender.

Step 2

Process the cookie pieces in short pulses to break them down further. Continue processing until the cookies create a crumb texture. Measure out 1 1/2 cups of the crumbs and pour them into a bowl.

Step 3

Melt 6 tbsp. butter in the microwave or on the stove top.

Step 4

Pour the melted butter on top of the cookie crumbs.

Step 5

Stir the crumbs immediately to spread the butter throughout the crumb mixture. Use your hands to blend the crumbs and butter if necessary.

Step 6

Press the crumbs in an even layer on the bottom and sides of the pie pan. Bake the crumb crust at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for eight to 10 minutes or refrigerate it for 20 minutes to set the crust. Fill the crust with the pie or cheesecake filling.

Tips and Warnings

  • Purchase a generic brand of the chocolate cookies to save money on the crust. If you don't have a food processor or blender, crush the cookies with a rolling pin. Place the cookies inside a large plastic bag and roll over them to create the crumbs. Stir 1/4 cup of sugar into the cookie crumbs before you add the butter if you prefer a sweeter crust. Mix in chopped, toasted nuts before pressing the crust into the pie pan for additional flavor and crunch.
