Tennis has a rich history and was once a sport reserved for royalty. Because of its elite nature, dress codes were typically enforced, which are still in place at many racket clubs today. While tennis attire has come a long way since its early days, certain standards remain. Dressing appropriately for a tennis match is a sign of respect both for the sport and your opponent.
Shoes
Proper tennis shoes should always be worn when playing a match. This is especially important when playing on clay courts. Shoes with too much tread, such as running shoes or cross trainers, can damage the soft clay surface. They can also scuff up hard courts since soles are typically made from black rubber. Wearing running shoes during a match could lead to injury; they are not designed for the intense lateral movements often required during tennis. Tennis shoes are designed specifically for different surfaces and to reduce the wear and tear on them.
Shorts
In general, only men are allowed to wear shorts during a tennis match. Men are discouraged from wearing baggy shorts or shorts with excessive graphics. Some private clubs provide specific guidelines for what type of shorts, and clothing in general, are acceptable. White shorts that leave the knees exposed are typically considered to be proper length. Women can wear shorts if they prefer, but this is not in keeping with tradition.
Skirts
Women typically wear skirts when playing a tennis match. Some wear tennis dresses -- a one-piece that allows the player to move freely and uninhibitedly. Modern advances in women's tennis outfits include stretchy skirts that make mobility easy, and skirts with built-in shorts. Skirts traditionally cover the knees, but this style is too restrictive for many. These days, women's skirts can expose the knees. Extremely short skirts should be accompanied by shorts underneath.
Collared Shirts
Both women and men should wear collared shirts when playing a tennis match. Many exclusive racket clubs require them. Women who wear tennis dresses should make sure their one-piece has a collar. The shirts should have two to three buttons near the collar. Most clubs frown upon T-shirts or tank tops, and shirts with excessive graphics on them. The preferred and traditional color for collared shirts at clubs is white.
Head Gear
Players are allowed to wear hats, visors or headbands to help keep the sun and sweat out of their eyes. Hats and visors are recommend if you are playing outdoors and under a bright sun. The head gear helps you see the ball better. Women and men are allowed to use hair bands to keep hair out of their face.
