There are thousands of weight loss diets that promise quick results in a short amount of time. However, several of these diets follow fads and may not be healthy. Many restrict entire food groups, have very low calorie counts and are not sustainable for long-term weight loss. Every individual is unique and no one weight loss plan is the perfect diet for quick weight loss. Eating a healthy diet that includes foods you enjoy, along with a regular physical activity program, is the best method for weight loss.

Determine Your Caloric Needs

Weight loss occurs when the number of calories you take in is less than what you burn off throughout a day. You can eat less food and/or burn more calories off by increasing physical activity levels. Many quick-fix weight-loss diets have you follow a very low-calorie plan that is not sustainable and may lead to adverse health effects. According to the Cleveland Clinic, people who follow very low-calorie diets typically regain the weight versus those who exercise more and eat less. Speak to your physician or a dietitian to determine your individual daily calorie needs.

Eat Fruits and Vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are nutrient-rich foods that are low in calories, have little to no fat and no added refined sugars. Produce is also a source of essential vitamins and minerals that are necessary for normal body functions, hormonal balance and skin health. They are also a source of dietary fiber which helps fill you up to prevent hunger cravings that typically lead to overeating foods high in sugar and fat. Aim for at least 5 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Food Journal

According to the Cleveland Clinic, recording what you eat in a food journal can help you identify your eating habits and areas of strengths and weaknesses. A journal should include everything you ate in a day for meals and snacks, any random bites of food, time of day you ate and even how you were feeling at that time. It is important to be specific and accurate in detailing your habits as this is how you can truly start to make changes for a healthier lifestyle.

Include Exercise

The best weight loss plans not only focus on a healthy, well-balanced diet but also include a regular exercise regimen. Exercise may not only help you lose weight, but it may also help lower blood pressure and cholesterol, maintain bone mass, decrease the risks of diabetes and heart disease and improve stress levels. The Cleveland Clinic cites that there are four main components to a well-rounded exercise program including cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance and flexibility, or stretching, exercises. Speak with your physician prior to initiating any new program or activity.
