If you like to sweat, Bikram yoga may be the style for you. During Bikram yoga, you perform yoga postures in a room set to a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The elevated temperature warms your muscles which helps you settle deeper into the yoga postures. This high temperature reduces the chance of injury to your muscles and joints, according to "Yoga Journal." As you sweat, you remove toxins from your body. Look for a certified Bikram yoga instructor when searching for a yoga class. However, before you begin a class you can prepare for it at home.

Step 1

Read a Bikram yoga book that illustrates poses. Watch a Bikram yoga video. And begin to learn the 26 Bikram yoga poses.

Step 2

Perform standing Bikram yoga poses. Stand tall and breathe deep. Stand with one leg extended to the front and bring your head to your knee. Stand with one leg lifted straight behind your body and fold your torso forward until you are parallel to the ground with your arms extended over your head.

Step 3

Practice seated Bikram yoga poses. Kneel and reach your hands to your heels as you bend backward into camel pose. Sit with crossed legs and rotate your torso to look behind you to twist your spine. Sit with one leg extended straight and the other bent with your heel next to the opposite inner thigh. Fold forward from your waist to stretch your leg.

Step 4

Practice Bikram poses from a lying position. Lie face up. Extend one straight leg onto the floor. Bend the other knee and pull it into your chest for a lower back stretch. Counteract the back stretch with a Locust pose. Lie face down. Straighten your legs on the floor behind you. Place your hands on your lower back. Lift your chest, arms and legs toward the ceiling.

Tips and Warnings

  • Gradually increase the temperature of your home during your yoga practice. Once you reach near 100 degrees Fahrenheit during your practice, take a Bikram yoga class.
