Tremors are characterized by the involuntary shaking or movement of a body part, most commonly the hands. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the three main types of tremors include the following: resting, or static, tremors; kinetic and intention tremors; and postural, or action, tremors. Though tremors can affect people of all ages, they are most common among the elderly. Herbs that have calming properties may help reduce the frequency and severity of tremors. Speak with your doctor before using herbs as an alternative treatment.
Causes
Tremors may be the result of an array of health conditions such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, a brain tumor, stroke or an overactive thyroid. In addition, tremors may be the result of excessive caffeine intake, alcohol withdrawal or alcoholism, stress, anxiety, low blood sugar and certain medications, according to "The New York Times" Health Guide.
Passionflower
Passionflower has been used in Europe as a calming herb to treat anxiety, seizures and hysteria. Scientists are not completely certain as to how passionflower works, but they believe that the herb increases GABA, or gamma aminobutyric acid in the brain. Increased amounts of GABA relax the body by lowering certain brain cell activity. The flowers, stems and leaves of passionflower are used medicinally to make teas, tinctures, infusions and liquid extracts. According to UMMC, up to 60 drops of liquid tincture may be taken up to three times per day.
American Skullcap
American skullcap has been used as a mild relaxant, and it has been used for more than 200 years to treat anxiety, nervous tension and convulsions. Skullcap works by soothing the nervous system and over-excited muscles throughout the body. Excessive use of this herb can lead to liver damage and should not be used if you are diagnosed with liver conditions. According to UMMC, up to 2 g of dried skullcap can be taken daily.
Warnings
Certain herbs may interact negatively with certain over-the-counter and prescription medications. It is strongly recommended that you speak with your doctor to determine the proper dosage for your condition before using herbal remedies. Herbs should not be administered to children without speaking to a doctor first. If you may be pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use herbs.
