Saw palmetto is probably best known for its use in decreasing symptoms of an enlarged prostate, known as benign prostatic hypertrophy or BPH. Weight gain is not listed as one of the suggested uses of saw palmetto, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and Memorial Sloan Cancer Center. Putting on weight can be accomplished by making healthy diet and exercise changes. Talk to your health care provider before using herbs.

History

Saw palmetto is a plant used historically by Native Americans to nourish the body, stimulate appetite and encourage weight gain. Native Americans also used the berries from the saw palmetto tree to treat urinary problems in men and breast disorders in women. Physicians in the United States and Europe later began using saw palmetto as a treatment for BPH. In the 1960s French researchers found that by concentrating the oils of the saw palmetto berry they could get the most out of the herb's medicinal value, according to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Today saw palmetto is a licensed product in several European countries.

Effects

While saw palmetto contains several biologically active chemicals, it's not completely understood which ones are the most critical. Chemicals in saw palmetto berries called sterols are suggested to block the ability of the hormone testosterone to grow prostate cells. The berries of the saw palmetto plant also contain high molecular weight polysaccharides or sugars, which may enhance the immune system and decrease inflammation, explains the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Recommendations

Trying to gain weight can be as difficult as trying to lose weight. While saw palmetto alone won't promote weight gain, it may be used to supplement a diet plan to help you add pounds. Start by eating five to six small meals throughout the day instead of two or three large meals. Add extra calories from healthy foods like whole-grain breads, cereals, pastas, fruits and vegetable, lean protein sources like chicken and fish. Calorie-dense foods, such as nuts, peanut butter, cheese and dried fruits can help you gain weight. Strength training exercises can promote weight gain by increasing muscle mass and possibly increase your appetite.

Safety

Saw palmetto can cause breast tenderness or enlargement and testicular discomfort in men, according to the Mayo Clinic. Side effects may also include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and bad breath. Check with your doctor before taking saw palmetto.
